the sky dropped down to darkness
as the spirit of a lioness revitalized itself in the hours
before light struck again
off like a panther
moving with the precision of a piston
perfecting the pattern of efficiency
excellence personified in the glare of bias
gliding against the rough grain of suppression
doing the best
while being treated the worst
no prizes
no oscars
no tonys
just secondary feminists
fighting for equality amongst the mentalists
eyes flutter before they respite
15 minutes transformed into an hour
joints stretch and bones snap to attention
race is back on
the tracks laid down by jim crow
though
awards and medals line the DNA
of safari’s soldiers
hidden from view
obstructed from reality
buried in books unpublished
we’re dressed in our finest
sunday’s very best
covered in pristine culture
so beautiful it glistens and glows
infused with an intricate
chemical makeup
not easily diffused
we always show up
and out
but
even after the miles and years
and moments are added up
accomplishments multiplied and divided by truth
someone is still there to say
hey, you’ve got a hole in your sock
as if it means something of substance
as if it detracts from the fact that we designed the shoe
that encased the foot of the warriors
that fought
bled and died
the sock may have a hole
but it’s minuscule
compared to the hole
in the oppressor’s soul

I loved it!
Thanks Lil Sis! 🙂
This is an amazing collection of poems! I smiled at the last one…so true.
Thank you Mary! I have had writers block lately so getting this one out was definitely an achievement.
‘someone is still there to say
hey, you’ve got a hole in your sock’
I get it. Great poem.
Thanks Shirley!
Gorgeous collection 🙂 so well done.
Thanks Sanaa. I like the idea of having a collection of poetry. ?
I always check if I got a hole in my socks ~
That last one is my favorite, such wisdom ~ Thanks for joining us at D’verse ~
I think we all are a little afraid of leaving home with holes in our socks. Sometimes I do it on purpose to rebel.
I especially love the bold poem within. Read by itself, so tight and powerful.
I appreciate you taking the time to visit. Thank you!
‘someone is still there to say
hey, you’ve got a hole in your sock’
Absolutely… I think I can relate to this…. the ever ready critics and their sense of entitlement.
Yup. It makes you feel defeated sometimes.
I love these:
“the sky dropped down to darkness”
“someone is still there to say”
Thanks so much Daisy!
Oh yes… very much like the mote in a brother’s eye and not not the beam in your own… I heard once the if you point a finger at someone there three other’s pointing right back at you. Great sentiment here.
I love that biblical phrase. So simple, yet powerful.
I love all the different twists and turns in the poem and then the holes, especially in the opressors souls. There are always those ready to see that hole but I sometimes think it is best ignored and as you say there is a hole in their soul but maybe because of their own feelings of sadness and being inadequate?
I agree. I think we are all scarred. None of us leave here without some kind of hole in us. We should be offering help to others instead of always pointing out perceived flaws.
