I’m feeling listy today. So let me set the scene for you. Earlier I was in my PJs’ lying toward the foot of my bed with my laptop elevated on a makeshift desk listening to Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly. As the music flowed into me, I came up with the following list. It’s just some things I think writers obsess about.
-
How many words they have in their head
-
If they will ever run out of words
-
Wondering if they can read every book in the world
-
Reading the front and back of the cereal box, milk carton & can of peas
-
Wondering who wrote the text for the front and back of the cereal box, milk carton & can of peas
-
Correcting the social media status’ and posts of their friends & strangers
-
Giving their NBA speech in front of all of their favorite writers
-
Seeing their book on the NYT Bestsellers List
-
Where do all the commas go
-
How the biblical writers survived without laptops and Kindles
-
What will be the last book they will write
-
How many ways can they write the word vagina
-
How many ways can they write the word dick
-
How many ways can they write the word buttocks
-
How many ways can they write the word love
-
How many rappers Shakespeare would have listened to
-
How they got from point A-Z on any given day of the week when their characters were really the one’s in the driver’s seat
-
When to stop writing after the period
-
How to fill the page
-
When to buy that cabin in the woods
-
Coming up with the funds to live while writing
-
Figuring out how to explain what you do to non-writers
-
Breathing evenly and deeply as to not go off on someone who doesn’t believe in you
-
Visualizing yourself cursing out every friend who never asks about your WIP – In slow motion so they can feel your pain
-
If words are so powerful why can’t they bring back our dead
-
If words are so powerful why can’t they banish bias
-
If words are so powerful why can’t they cure diseases
-
Why words are so powerful
Did I leave anything out? No worries. There will be a part 2 coming up soon.
Now, it’s your turn to share your writer obsessions. Tell me something good. I need it.

“Breathing evenly and deeply as to not go off on someone who doesn’t believe in you”
Haha I get this one for sure
The one about cursing silently those that don’t ask about your WIP, with me it is the opposite, garnering interest and then they ask and I don’t have anything to tell them because I’m stuck, or distracted, or writing poems instead ~
I think it’s a blessing for you that they ask because it shows they care and believe in you. Also, it will keep you on your toes! Good stuff!
