words are power
spoken or written
they can form a steel tower
so lofty and flighty
you think you can climb them
then you wake up the next day
and you can’t even find them
how can something so strong in meaning
and beautiful in a verse
cut you so deep that they can make your heart hurt?
why? huh? you say you can’t understand
how words you can’t touch can break a woman?
well let me tell you like this
remember the song that was playing when you had your first kiss?
uh-huh – of course you do
music composed with words live inside of you
they seep into your blood stream
and survive forever in your system
they color up your memories and make your soul perk up and listen
still don’t get it?
still can’t see the vision?
that’s cool, it’s all love
yeah, that’s peace
it’s cool as a fan
and sizzling hot like chicken grease
but just know that we communicate with words
hugs are cool
touches are great
but without words an embrace can dissipate
letters linger, massage and caress
settle in your inner
like birds chill in a nest
so the next time you get close and want to profess your like
remember that your words have a helluva might
they have more strength than you can imagine
it’s like a crowd filled with fans and Common is rapping
they can be hypnotic and leave you in a daze
make you weak, give you hope and sunny up your day
words can also break your world
leave you naked in a desert amidst the dust swirls
but as long as you believe in the power you have within
words will never destroy your spirit or will
because you can rearrange those same words to help you heal
and that’s real!
peace!

This is awesome…such a beautiful message.
“Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”
Very well written Tameka…
Amen, sistah. Love it. Words are sooo powerful. They can contain life or death or a plethora in between! xo
Tameka, Your words are magical and so true. Love the way you think and write.
Words can build or break – the choice is ours!
Great post… Words have so much power that we forget what we say especially in anger!
Oh I love this Tameka :* esp. that part on rearranging those ‘same’ words to help you heal.
They are powerful because words are alive 🙂 So, I promised God to offer a blessing instead of a curse, to tell the truth despite of oppositions, to be gentler and kinder to every creature I meet. And to sing those words to make them twice as powerful 😛
And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
There’s so much to reflect on your post 🙂
This reminds me of my poem “Words”.Yes words are powerful, they can cut you deep as well as melt you to the core. But as you say it is you have the power to change them for something positive. Loved this Tameka
This is very true. Words do have huge power. Great poem.

Hello Tameka.
I echo everyone’s sentiments & more. Great rhythm & flow. This reminds me of one of those open mic events. You’re on stage wowing the crowd with your lyrics & everybody’s in a frenzy because they’re “feelin” it. 😉
Awesome!
Thanks for sharing & visiting. I appreciate the comments.

nice, nice… a fun read & still powerful.. a lot of meaning in these words
Hi, Tameka! ~
God knows, I love words! But, I don’t know if I agree that they’re better than other forms of communication, like hugs, for example.
My ex-husband, the Darkly Gifted Songwriter, used to say, “Words are all we have.” It is possibly true that’s all he has, but, that’s not all I have…
Hi ANTHONY! Thanks for your comments and your visit. Happy New Year!
ANDY, thanks so much! I think I will recite this in a slam soon. It does have a nice rhythm. Happy New Year dear!
Hey LINDA! I didn’t say words were better, we need words and physical intimacy! But there are times when a touch is meaningless and used only for one’s own satisfaction. Words can be used that way as well, but when they are pure and true, how amazing. I hear you though! We need both! Happy New Year!
Words can make or break your world. Love this piece.http://thepoetrydiner.blogspot.com/
Keep writing so we can keep reading.
Welcome The Poetry Diner and thank you! It’s so nice to see that you’ve visited! I will have lots more posts on tap soon. Just settling into the new year! Cheers!
