I usually present a favorite word on Friday, but I wanted to do something different. So today I will share a piece of my creative process. I’m often asked what inspires me to write poetry and how I connect to my many different muses.
Well, earlier this morning I was watching Maxwell’s Five Days of Black, the mini-doc that was included with his CD, BLACKsummers’night and watching his process helped me come up with the following poem. Many times we are inspired to create by watching others. Here is my result:
Syncopated Soliloquy
in the pocket – in the pocket
right there in the groove baby
ummmm…
so tight I can barely move
rhythmic, majestic
poetry is jealous of your lyrical symmetry
flowing so sweetly over my hands
through my fingers
lighting up the ions of my soul for eons
sparking inner and outer flames that never flicker
staying right there in the pocket baby
yeah, that’s right
linger
in the middle
i’m throbbing thoughout my day
rocking to your fading beat
it’s faint, but so damn loud
moving me and making my hips swing
side to side
up and down
round and round
i rise to meet your modulation
and pause for fever pitches
that salute me
waves and waves of treble roar and soar
then dip deeply into bass lines
ummmm…
right there in the pocket baby
perfect vibe
a loud lewd groove
so tight i can barely move
so tight baby ummm
right there in the pocket
smooth

I love how other modalities will inspire…you just never know where it is going to come from. The beauty is, you follow the rythmm of creativity, trust and post! Beautiful…
Nice add with your notepad…makes the reader feel as if they are right there with you..listening over a cup of coffee while you read your inspiration…thanks for sharing…
Hi Ravenmyth. Thanks for your kind words. Yes, inspiration is everywhere. Anything can spark it. Just like Maxwell was moved by window wipers, we can hear or see something that will send us spinning off in different creative directions. I loved how he was breaking down how songs are created. It’s not just one person coming up with it all. Everyone in his band plays a part. Even for those of us who create poetry alone in a room, we too are taking the baton from other creative beings and then banging the drum to create our own beats!
I loved this post, the artist’s process is a subject I never tire of hear about. Writers, any artist really, are a breed unto themselves. I did like the photos of your scribbles, nice touch, and your favorite Friday word.
Hi Brenda. Thanks so much for your comments. I love hearing about other artists processes as well. It is quite fascinating how art comes alive.
Blessings to you!
