In my continuous search for new books to read I’ve unearthed a title from a debut author for this week’s Book Binge. Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts’s “Harlem is Nowhere: A Journey to the Mecca of Black America” seems to want to take the reader into the heart of Harlem through the eyes of a Texan.
This book intrigues me because I moved from Detroit to Harlem in the early 90’s. It was a jarring experience for me and I’m looking forward to reading about how Ms. Rhodes Pitts compares and contrasts her life growing up in Texas to now being in Harlem.
Unfortunately it’s rare to find an author of color reviewed and documented on the pages of the New York Times unless they are already an established writer, so it was nice to see her work recognized.
