Lyric Fire: NaPoWriMo 2012 – Day 17 of 30 Poems in 30 Days – Loopy Letter

NaPoWriMo 2012 – 30 Poems in 30 Days – Day 17

Today’s poetry prompt seems to have been created with me in mind. Participants of NaPoWriMo are being charged to write an epistolary poem — a poem in the form of a letter. Some of you know that I’m currently working to self publish my novel, Letters to Chyna, which isn’t an epistolary novel per se, but does feature several letters that are of high intrigue and importance to the main character.

According to the prompt, in addition to the poem being epistolary, it has to address an inanimate object and also calls for the addition of:

1) a song lyric
2) a historical fact
3) an oddball adjective-noun combination (like red grass or loud silence)
4) a fruit
5) the name of a street in your neighborhood
6) a measure of distance

This was a serious challenge, but I THINK I pulled it off. Please enjoy:

Loopy Letter

Dear Computer Keys,

You have been sticking and locking with great fervor these days. Quite literally you have been acting much like a curmudgeon. Rank and devilish with a touch of grump. I know you take a beating, but your cooperation would be most appreciated as I’m trying to woo and wow a lover with some wonderful words and turns of phrase.

For example: “I extend to thee a tall glass of love to wash down with your purple bread which will most certainly sustain and fill you with vitality before you partake in the real meal that is me.” See? I need you to be smooth in your delivery if I am to complete this correspondence. I want to be the recipient of New York’s official flower, the rose, but my words must flow and be filled with color and embellishments as the chap of my affections is of the artsy suit.

I feel as if I’m constantly being misunderstood by you, Mr. Keys, but that should not be. I touch you with rough passion yes, but also love and care. We should be close, but you act as if we are millions of miles away from one another. We are one, I am an extension of you as you are me. If I’ve hurt you, I apologize. Come, let’s get together and be all right.

If you behave I will let you rest for a while and will take my leave of you for a spell. I’ll walk a few miles to West End Avenue and pass by the fruit stand. There is a pomegranate with my name on it. When I return, I will be more gentle to you. I promise.

Sincerely,

Me
