My Blog Lyric Fire: Book to Binge On: “Some Sing, Some Cry” By Ntozake Shange and Ifa Bayeza

All you have to do is mention “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf” and most people know the author. They may not know how to pronounce her name, but they know she can craft a great story. Ntozake Shange has done it again. This time she writes with another author, her sister Ifa Bayeza, and tells the story of seven generations of strong Black women. No one builds Black female characters better than Shange, so I’m looking forward to reading this latest work. Wow, so many great books and not enough time! Happy reading!

Excerpt of New York Times Book Review

Now Ntozake Shange (of “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf” fame) and her playwright sister, Ifa Bayeza, have staked their own place in this tradition with their novel, “Some Sing, Some Cry.” A rich mix of storytelling and African-American history, it follows seven generations of black women who, largely through music, are able to survive the violence of their national and personal histories even as they find themselves too battle-scarred to mother their children with real joy.

  1. I have never heard of this. I love to read and by your description of this story, I am interested. It’s true, some people laugh to keep from crying and some sing. I don’t know how many times something upset me and I just broke out into a song; an old fashion hymnalor a little R&B song that came from the bottom of my stomach. You know, it’s one of those songs filled with so much pain it almost hurts to sing it but when you’ve finished you feel so free!

  2. Hi there Poetically Candid! I’m going to buy “Some Sing, Some Cry” later this week. I can’t wait to read it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I know when I’m upset listening to music helps me so much. I hum when I’m nervous! BTW, I’m enjoying reading your poetry. Keep it up! Have a great week!
