NaPoWriMo 2016 – Poem 2 – The Contract

sprout-the-contract

Day 2 of the 30 Poems in 30 Days challenge is here! The poetry prompt on napowrimo.net asks us to create a poem that takes the form of a family portrait. Here is my offering, The Contract.

A coupling cemented over coffee and spreadsheets

Accidental romance between colleagues

Led to love

An empire was the goal

My brain

Your vision

Fused to create capital

Corporations and conglomerates

We celebrate by traversing miles

Losing ourselves in lost cultures

Praising our own acumen

While eating delicacies and spending currency

The creation of life seeds put off until we’ve lived more

Made more

Done more

Consumed with the brilliance of our being

Together

Gracing covers of praise publications

See, we have it all

Then

A sickness

Ignored by deals and meetings

Grew into a treasure we had not negotiated

This meeting won’t take place in a conference room

The crowning of a new kind of interest

We bond now over breast milk and bed sheets

Our most exciting moments spent in the bedroom

Not boardroom

Our biggest deal yet

A lifelong contract of loving you
