Mothers

It’s so funny that mother rhymes with smother

but I think we in some way want that kind of love

we hem and haw about their over attentiveness

but without it, there is a lack and longing

there are some of us who escaped the hugs & kisses

our mothers were not ready

some were still in the infancy of their own maturity

some had neither the financial nor emotional resources to give away

so what is a mother that does not smother?

is she any less of a parent?

should we love her less?

even when we try to distance ourselves DNA kicks in

and whispers to us

give her another chance

if we refuse to let her in

we will be at peace in some ways

we won’t have to hear the explanations or excuses

we won’t be in danger of feeling more for her than we should

but…

if we shut her out altogether

aren’t we going against nature?

will we suffer silently and hurt in places we never knew existed?

how i wish i could answer the question

of mother

and solve the riddle of mommy

  1. Sweepy Jean says:

Interesting questions you raise in this poem. The difference between mother and mommy … great stuff!

  2. Thanks Sweepy! Maybe my answers will come when I become a mommy/mother. Perhaps not. 😉

You can’t ignore a mother’s love anymore than we can ignore the love a mother feels for a child. Someone’s love isn’t that out of world feeling that we feel inside us but, rather the love we feel for them.
Great questions you ask in this poem.

  4. Hi Jende. So many questions, not enough answers. Just as you said, some bonds just can’t be broken. No matter how hard we try.
