My Blog Lyric Fire: Ode to Love Via Brown Penny Poem by William Butler Yeats

Valentine’s Day is coming up soon and it has me thinking about love declarations. Whether you have that romantic connection now or not, it does the heart good to reflect on love and reading poetry can conjure up some beautiful feelings.

Here is a lyrical line from me for those who may have lost a love or may be longing right now:

Focus not on lack, but on fullness. The past, present and future is filled with love. Look around you, hear it reverberate against your insides, listen to it sing you a melody. Ah, how sweet the sound as it mirrors the symphony of a rushing sea.

What follows is one of the most pure poems about love ever written. Read it slowly and drink in the magic of the words:

Brown Penny – William Butler Yeats

I whispered, ‘I am too young,’
And then, ‘I am old enough’;
Wherefore I threw a penny
To find out if I might love.
‘Go and love, go and love, young man,
If the lady be young and fair.’
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
I am looped in the loops of her hair.
O love is the crooked thing,
There is nobody wise enough
To find out all that is in it,
For he would be thinking of love
Till the stars had run away
And the shadows eaten the moon.
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
One cannot begin it too soon.

To hear the poem recited, watch the clip from One Life to Live which features characters Marty Saybrooke & Patrick Thornhart making a love connection. Thorsten Kaye (Patrick) could read just about anything and make it sound good and Susan Haskell’s (Marty) ability to pull you into her characters with her authenticity is always on point.

Enjoy Valentine’s Day, but remember to show your love everyday, whether it’s romantic, platonic or familial. We all need love to survive.

Cheers.

  2. Hello Jim. How romantic having your anniversary on Valentine’s Day! I read your post and fully agree with you. There is nothing wrong with having a day devoted to showing people you love them. Most people focus only on romantic love during this time, but showing ALL kinds of love should be done on the daily.
Blessings to you and your family!

“We all need love to survive”…Being loved on this earth is a real “blessing”…it’s s a unique, wonderful treasure in our hands…our commitment must be to nurture it every day ….not only on Saint – Valentine’s.

Do you Know where I can find the name of the song playing during Patrick’s voice over?

  6. Hello Vicki. It is a lovely song. I would try getting access to the full episode and watching the credits at the end. They often feature the names of song titles and their composers. Most of the episodes are on YouTube.
If that doesn’t work, try writing to the folks at One Life to Live. They would be glad to help you.
When you find out come back and share with us!
    Thanks for stopping by.
