Lyric Fire: Thank You For Leonard Cohen

I should have been ashamed to
not have known your name

I had heard a few songs that
I recalled from movies and such

but yet my memory could not
begin to touch

Your range, your voice and
mysterious way

until I saw you lay it out on
the Garden stage

With knowing, lyrical wisdom,
and delicious poetry

you sang and emoted and I
said to myself, wow, does he know me?

Your hypnotic and deep delivery
traveled to the most inner parts of me

it touched that soft place that
likes to take it slow and groove real nice

I was made to tune in,
breathe steady and turn off my soul fight

Your words reverberated off
the wall of my consciousness

and made me remember things
that I work hard to forget

Like glints of moonlight dancing
off the water

soulful silhouttes gravitating,
pushing and pulling

photographic memories of
lust-filled evenings

the silence in between the
sound

hungry lovers longing for the
times of getting down

forecasts of love gone wrong
and done right

seeing things clearly even at
midnight

notes scribbled out in anger
and shame

star chasers wounding themselves
for a taste of fame

Sometimes we need someone to
remind us to not only live life

but to examine it, explore the
cracks and seams

you do that with song and poetic
means

As colored lights shine down
on a white hot stage

your art burns brightly
showing no age

your passion spills

arenas fill

folks leave entertained,
inspired, amazed

Just as a president carefully
chooses the cabinet

You have also surrounded
yourself with the best

acrobatic songbirds

an angelic partner of prose
and song

and the list just flows on
and on

Masters of strings, breath
and keys

round out your team
brilliantly

as they play and please

I could continue with the
praise and flattery

because I have it to spare

But I think I’ll play one of
your songs and let it fill the air

One Friday night in New York

it rained and as the drops
fell artfully

from the sky

I looked upward first, then
to my left and to my right

And whispered to the highest:
